After university, I decided to take a calculated risk and start my own business. Instead of working for a single employer, I had the amazing opportunity to manage the marketing strategies, rebrands, advertisements and websites of eight Canadian business in the course of one year.
Explore my journey as a small business owner, the challenges I faced and how I solved them. Not mention the lessons learned when dealing with other business owners and their expectations.

The vision of the business
A closer look into our virtual offices
Hectoor Creative Studio (HCS) is a registered Canadian business that focuses on providing design and marketing consulting services to small businesses across metro Vancouver.
It’s a remote based business model that did not require to lease any offices and therefore, making it the prefect opportunity to playfully create virtual offices that fit the overall branding of the business. Above are 3D renders of the imagery I envisioned for the launch of this venture.

HCS offered 6 types of services. I primarily focused on executing and planning marketing campaigns, improving brands and creating/maintaining websites. Being an independent contractor allowed me to explore other fields like project and business management, as well as, becoming the supervisor of staff and interns.

Demonstrating my competencies
I created several case studies in my Behance page to act as proof of my skills and work experience. I did not have any clients at the start, therefore, these case studies acted as references for clients to browse and understand the type of work that I can create.
Frondu Cooking Essentials
Frondu Cooking Essentials is a portfolio piece that showcases my design and branding abilities. It contains examples of logo design, typography, color palettes, packaging and signage.

Fictional Businesses
Memorable branding allows costumers to connect more easily to a brand, product or service. I believe brand identify plays great role in how costumers interact and perceive a business.

How I attracted my clients
I created several Facebook Ads using After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator. These video ads were published within the greater Vancouver Area and ran for about two months. These ads targeted individuals between the age of 35-60, who owned a business, had a job title of owner, or were associated with marketing or business management.
Ads ran simultaneously in an A-B testing format to see which one did better. The Ad showing the online cart brought the most traffic into my website and Facebook Page and help me land a couple of clients. Clients seen below.

Canadian Mattress Recycling | CMR
CMR was my longest client during my business journey. Terryl, the owner of the company hired me as the website developer and marketing specialist. I was in charge of maintaining and updating CMR’s three corporate websites. These websites were made in WordPress and needed constant update and refinement. The updates included, copy and prices changes, charitable contributions and working hours. Additionally, the creation of social media campaigns to promote sustainability and CMR services. Social platform used were Facebook, and Twitter.
All website data and social media metrics were recored and analysed quarterly. The data was then shared with Terryl, to provide recommendations as to how we can improve our SEO and landing pages. . Below are examples of my work.
Challenge: Websites and contact forms kept crashing due to an unsupported WordPress theme. Unable to upgrade due to budget constraints.
Solution: Do weekly website scans and purge any conflicting plugins. This stopped website crashes all along and provided the customer service team with uninterrupted contact between clients.
Challenge: On occasions, due to unforeseen circumstances CMR was not able to provide immediate marketing goals.
Solution: This forced me to be proactive, analyze previous business goals and produce marketing goals that align with CMR mission of becoming Vancouver’s best mattress recycler. Terryl appreciated my self-starter attitude and allowed me to continue doing this without supervision. This would save her valuable time as she is a very busy person.

Sovereign Engineering Limited
Sovereign Engineering is an electrical engineering firm located in the greater Vancouver area. They hired me to redesign their brand and their corporate website.
Their Rebrand Included: New logo, typography, voice, and color palette
